Fish on Toast

James Pipe

Head Honcho

When I joined Southampton as a Mechanical Engineering Fresher, I wouldn't have described myself as an entrepreneur.

Fast forward three years and Richard Branson's right hand man just bought me a beer; I ran a conference for over a hundred people in March; I'm the director of a limited company and last summer I had an internship with Doug Richard, one of the original BBC2 Dragons, at his School for Startups in Cambridge.

Now, as President of Fish on Toast - the University of Southampton Entrepreneurs and I can recommend anyone who wants to do anything amazing whilst at Uni next year should join us today. It is going to be awesome: We're hosting incredible speakers, running business idea competitions with cash prizes, not to mention the local and national social events!

I'm going into my fourth year now and although it's going to be intense, I've got an incredible committee this year and I'm still massively excited as ever.

Chris Houghton

Internal Affairs

Hi, my name's Chris and I'm your Vice-President this year, which basically means I'm someone who can actually be bothered to organise a few things and send a few emails. I think Fish on Toast is brilliant as you get to meet people who are really ambitious and want to go a long way in life. This ambition seems to be contagious, as I haven't left yet.

I've been really interested in business for about 18 months now and have been constantly hopping from one idea to the next for most of that time. My most recent project that I'm working in with a couple of friends is a charitable search engine called Search2Give that gives 50% of its revenue to charities of the searchers' choice.

I'm a big believer and supporter of businesses that do good in the world at the same time as making money. These things do not have to be separate. The most obvious crises in the world right now are global warming, and third world poverty (Especially AIDS at the moment). Donations do something, but not nearly enough to make a complete change. Business has to do that.

It'll be awesome to see you at Fish on Toast meetings and have a chat.

Brad Fitchew

Postgrad Chief

Hi, I'm Bradley. I'm surprisingly a third year undergraduate studying Management with Entrepreneurship. I like; Indian food, hot weather and meeting people with ambitious aspirations.

I'm the post-graduate officer for Fish on Toast 09/10. That basically means I'm in charge of recruiting PG students into the society and ensuring they're getting what they want out of Fish on Toast, after all I'm sure there's some great ideas and experience to be collaborated upon, through Fish on Toast (and please contact me if so)!

I feel enterprise can free people to do what they want in their lives, something exciting and engaging practically 24/7. I'm sure it's hard work, but the experience is surely thrilling and hopefully once you've made it, then I believe there's more to be earned than in any other profession or job! I have always wanted to start and run a successful business, last year I founded 'Southampton Student Housing', helping landlords find tenants for housing and I intend to carry this on this year! I'm always on the lookout for business schemes and ideas and have probably attempted dozens since the age of about 12.

Next year, after University, I intend to go on an expedition around the business world networking and travelling to find the inspiration for a winning business idea!

Nell Jeffries

Guiding Light

Hi, I'm Nell, I'm the Women's Officer for Fish on Toast 2009/10, and I'm reading English and French.

Men are still twice as likely as women to start a business; but why? I would like to (somewhat boldly) suggest that this is because not nearly enough women are attending Fish on Toast.

My role then is to try to encourage more of us to get involved and demonstrate that of course, we are just as good. - I'll being making sure we have some brilliant female entrepreneurs dropping into our sessions and dishing out invaluable advice by the (hand)bagful; so make sure you get involved and help redress the balance!

If I had to I would date my interest in business back to my primary school days, when, having identified the playground as a market place, I attempted to sell stationary to the younger years that happened to have left their pencil case at home (!) This venture lasted a total of one day, after which my stock had run out and I had moved onto greater things.

I am currently developing my most recent project named 'Synapse': a service vital to all Southampton University students and entrepreneurs. Look out for it around campus this term and when you can, make sure you 'sign up to Synapse'; it's free!

Despite my title, I am not a raging feminist, so, Male or female, I look forward to meeting you this term and if there's anything in particular you'd like to see F.O.T doing better or differently, please do let us know.

Richard Davis

Design Director

Hello! My name is Richard and for 2009/10 I am responsible for the graphical design and media side of Fish on Toast, which includes creating the cool stuff like t-shirts, hoodies and flyers for the society.

I am a second year Finance student with a passion for business and from an early age have always dreamt up small money making schemes and enterprising projects, intrigued by entrepreneurs and their stories of success.

Fish on Toast is a fantastic opportunity for you to come and meet like minded people and be inspired to go out there and create something for yourself! The team this year has some big ideas and we are all buzzing about what the future brings - I look forward to meeting you personally at Fish on Toast!

Will Wickens

Membership Guru

Hi there! My name is Will, surprisingly I'm still not entirely sure what my official FOT title is (Maybe I've just forgotten!). Although what I haven't forgotten is what I want you guys to notice over the next year...

  • A amazingly friendly atmosphere within fish on toast
  • Feeling like you belong to Fish on Toast not just drop into the odd event
  • That you have a say in how FOT is run and improved!

My background: I am a 4th year Aerospace Engineer, Windsurf club ex-treasurer now Windsurf club "Old Boy" and have even dabbled in the odd SUSU election campaign or two! I like setting high targets for myself, my latest is an Iron Man Triathlon.

Mohammad Javadi

Finance Sage

Hi, my name is Mohammad, currently a 2nd year PhD student of Management Accounting at University of Southampton, and Financial Manager of the Fish On Toast (FOT) Society as well. Frankly speaking, I'm very keen and happy to work with Fish On Toast.

My role is monitoring and managing all financial affairs of FOT (budget planning, events funding, membership payments, keeping bank and paypal accounts, financial reporting, etc.). As a part of my responsibilities I should deal and liaise with different bodies and sponsors to make that we are not running out of money!

When you see a program or an event is being run by FOT, or when you are enjoying your delicious pizza at the end of our events, behind the scenes, we've been negotiating with companies to get you the best deal and some strong sponsorship to finance our programs.

Regarding entrepreneurship, I strongly believe everyone is potentially an entrepreneur, but just a few have the required confidence to take their ideas seriously and put them into the practice. Therefore, all you need is to change to your mindset! And this is what exactly we are trying to fulfil here at FOT. I myself have got lots of ambition and ideas to take forward through FOT!

Finally, you are young and have a fresh mind. So why not come along to take the advantage of this unique opportunity and join FOT right now (before it's too late)! See you entrepreneurs very soon!
