Elections 09

If you would like to get properly involved with Fish on Toast and would like to know more about our upcoming elections, check out this pdf:The Fish on Toast 2009 Elections Guide.

Tony Kissack - President

Hello, I'm Tony, president of Fish on Toast for 08/09. I've just finished a summer internship at a respected ad agency in London. Buy me a pint and I'll happily wax lyrical about my many adventures, speaking of which I shall hopefully have a few more anecdotes by the time I get back from Hungary for Freshers Week!

I am, and have been, involved in a handful of different companies (for pretty much different reasons each time). I started my first company in 2007, with two other 'Fish on Toast'ers called Clubsoton Limited. Part funded by Fish Food, the purpose of our company was to make information on Southampton's night life more accessible. We've packed it in now (the site is still up I think, click here) due to our never getting the necessary support from SUSU.

Overall, I think I'd describe myself as a bad driver, incredibly funny, noble, brave, chivalrous, muscular, and a good listener (that just isn't true) but just come down to one of our sessions and make up your own mind. Or stalk me on Facebook.

Tom Saunders - Vice President

Hello! I'm Tom, vice-chair for Fish on Toast. I'm a third year student studying Management with Entrepreneurship. I like: Guinness, visiting new places, meeting new people and pretending I knew things that were new to me. My favourite word is Passion.

I feel that Universities generally leave out some really vital ‘real life’ skills on their courses. You go to University and get some great academic knowledge, but you are not taught how to communicate effectively or give an ‘elevator pitch’ for example. This is where Fish can step in! By watching some inspirational speakers, attending the training type sessions, getting involved in challenges like ‘The £50 Charity Challenge’ and even starting up your own project (why not!) you can really develop and learn some of those skills which will help you to succeed in life!

As Fish on Toast is a hub of activity, I have been part of the set up of SIFE Southampton, which is a social enterprise created by students. We have several projects that aim to increase economic opportunity for others. Our projects include: helping poor families in Madagascar set up their own business through a micro-lending project, selling t-shirts to fund a rice-growing operation in Sierra Leone in collaboration with a local charity and providing small businesses with facebook consultancy. If you're interested join our facebook group to find out more!

By the way, don't buy Tony a pint, buy me one - I'm much more interesting.

James Pipe - Technical

Hi, I'm James Pipe, technical officer - I have just spent about 100 hours of my life crafting this website. perhaps I should have spent that on a couple of uni modules instead? No matter. I believe my other responsibilities include sorting out the events calender and ensuring the mailing list system works as expected. Perhaps I will even poke a projector during one of our sessions.

I started my first company - Clubsoton Limited with Tony and Baraka in the first year. It was a great start; we built a brilliant website with loads of functionality and met up with about fifty venues, gathering contacts from all over the place. Challenges arrose when we tried to penetrate SUSU and the Uni Halls. They were hostile towards us because they'd had bad experiences with similar companies in the past. Although we have all but wound it up now, I still got a wealth of real life business experience (...and A LOT of free vodka and kudos) that you just can't get anywhere else! I totally recommend the experience to anyone.

I'm a third year Mechanical Engineer and spent my summer enjoying a work placement at Siemens VAI Metal Technologies in Research and Development. They do all the hardcore stuff that gets metal in the ground to profucts you use everyday. I live in Portswood with three other guys (including Mr Kissack) and this year I will be cycling, climbing, destroying myself on the Uni ski trip and regularly attending 'The Palace Of Dreams'. It'l be great to meet everyone in the Fish on Toast Sessions.

Chris Houghton - Secretary

Hey! I'm Chris and I'm the Secretary for Fish on Toast 2008/2009. The term 'secretary' may sound a little ambiguous so I prefer to refer to myself as 'Le biatch de la President'. I'm currently a Fresher doing Mechanical Engineering and next year I'll be a fresher doing Management! (Wasn't for me) I've been with Fish on Toast for while now and will be running for Vice President for next year.

I love Fish on Toast as the people involved all have burning ambition. Simply being around people like that pushes you to further heights. Being involved has been incredibly inspiring and rewarding, and I'd encourage anyone interested in business to get involved.

Since legally being allowed to do so, I have been messing around on the internet with various online retail methods, trying to make money and learn more. More recently I have become a lot more serious in this approach and now have been running a company selling watches on eBay, and so far have turned over more than £1000 and rising.

One type of people I hate: people who belittle your ambition.

My philosophy of life: "Do what you love. Do it well. Make mo money."

Karim El Shabrawy - Fish Food

Hey! I'm Karim and I'll be coordinating this year's Fish Food Challenge. Over the next couple of months I hope to organise a set of exciting and informative events to enable you to get the support and funding you need to make your business idea a reality.

I'm currently a PhD student at ECS and I'm an advocate of cutting-edge technologies developed for generating renewable energy. Aside from the PhD, I'm in charge of running the IEEE student branch here in Southampton. At the moment I'm looking to raise sponsorship for a solar-powered boat, The Tarka, which will be competing at an intercollegiate world championship race in the US.

I'm also an active member of the Wessex Sailing Club and an obsessed swimmer (working on getting that Phelps body look!).

Emma Ruston - Social Secretary

Hi, I'm Emma, Social Secretary for Fish on Toast. I'm a third year Economics Student and am the President of EconSoc for 08/09, you can check out the things that we do on our website.

I have spent my summer interning at KPMG in my home town of Birmingham and am looking forward to beginning a career in Restructuring on graduating.

As Social Secretary I am planning to organise some great nights out for Fish on Toast members, including a Cheese and Wine Tasting Evening later on in the term. I would be keen to hear from our members on what kind of social events they would like to see organised so please get in touch if you have any ideas!

I look forward to meeting all our new members at our first session!

Baraka Rumamba - Treasurer

Hello, I'm Baraka and I am:

  • reading Economics to learn how to earn Profits as opposed to Wages.
  • one of the Co-founders of Clubsoton.co.uk
  • passionate about Literature, Jazz, Salsa, Theater, Opera, Film Noir and Philosophy
  • a believer in 'Capitalism with a head and a heart'.

James Duncan - Marketing

G'day! I'm James, FoT's Marketing Man. I just would like to welcome you to our network. I really believe that if you want it enough (and you need to want it enough), that anybody is able to become an entrepreneur. To some, it comes more naturally, while others have to work harder. But think about what a wise man (or woman) once said:

'No-one is an entrepreneur until they become one'.

So..it is really up to YOU! If this sort of thing then is at all an interest to you (starting your own business or just becoming more enterprising), than I can personally vouch for Fish on Toast as a great platform or starting point to do so.

Anyone who witnessed our first speaker of the year, Zenna Atkins, will agree that our sessions can leave you inspired and with tips and knowledge that doesn't come by that easily.

For those of you who haven't already, submit your idea for the Beermat Challenge, it's a great chance if you are after the support, contacts and advice of fellow FoTs.
